TestVid Uncompressed Video Test Sequences Technical overview

 

TestVid clips encompass the following video types:

  • YUV uncompressed video, with associated audio
  • Designed specifically for testing video encoders, with a range of subjects and features (see below)
  • 2D and 3D stereoscopic
  • Almost all common sizes of video: from 80x60 all the way to 4K D-Cinema; 8-bit, 10-bit, 12-bit and 14-bits per sample; 4:2:0, 4:2:2 and 4:4:4
  • Length of each sequence typically 15 seconds to 45 seconds (some shorter, some up to two minutes)

 

Native video format

All video was filmed HD 1920x1080 or higher resolution (majority of recent sequences filmed with cameras with sensors 3.8k x 2k), in the USA (New York, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Florida) and Europe (London, Barcelona, Munich) except the test set T2V006_Synthetic which was generated at various sizes.

 

Subject/feature types

The TestVid test clip sets cover just about the whole range of video features that an encoder is likely to encounter, including a range of subjects, motion, colors, light levels designed to fully test and stress the video encoder:

  • Subject types such as people, traffic, buildings, sky, water, trees, text..
  • Movement types such as panning, zooming in/out, tracking, hand-held camera, fast, slow..
  • Subject motion such as into, out of or across the picture, in front of and partially behind objects
  • Lighting conditions, from bright sunlight, dull daylight, shaded areas, indoors, night-time..
  • Varying camera properties such as depth of field, in/out-of-focus..
  • Hard to encode items such as reflections, fine lines, patterns, round objects..
  • And with sound associated with almost all of the video clips

 

The purpose is to ensure that someone who is evaluating an encoder or decoder can be confident that the encoder will not 'fall over' or encode really slowly when dealing with 'difficult video', and importantly allows the codec user to fully compare different encoders or the codec developer to optimize the encoder for a whole range of video.
